Mental health and well being

What is mental health and well being?

Mental health refers to our emotional and psychological well being - it is about how we think, feel and behave.

One way to think about mental health is by looking at how well we function day to day. Being able to handle normal levels of stress, leading an independent and full life and being able to "bounce back" from difficult situations or life events, are all signs of good mental health.

Good mental health is an important part of our overall health and well being and is just as important as physical health.

What is a mental health problem?

Mental health problems take many different forms and affect people in different ways. They can range from mild to moderate problems that are common, through to less common but severe problems.

Experts believe that as many as 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem such as depression and anxiety at some point in our lives. These problems can have a major effect on our ability to cope with everyday living. When problems become overwhelming help and support from professionals is often needed.

The following pages give an overview of common mental health problems and the services available in South Gloucestershire.
