Our job is to provide and plan health services for the approximately 258,800 people who live in South Gloucestershire.

We want to:

  • Improve the health of people living in South Gloucestershire by effective partnerships with organisations and local people.
  • Reduce the differences in health between people and places in South Gloucestershire.
  • Bring more health services closer to local people by delivering more primary and community based services.
  • Improve the experience of local patients when they use health by making sure that health services are provided promptly, safely and effectively.

The PCT buys or commissions health services from a range of providers, including North Bristol NHS Trust at Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and elective surgery procedures at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre. We also commissions mental health services from Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

Within the area covered by South Gloucestershire PCT there are 29 GP practices and 23 general dental practices. The PCT employs a total of 760 staff or 482 full time equivalents cross its commissioning and provider arms. Of these, over 470 are clinical staff such as nurses, physiotherapists and podiatrists.

The PCT works in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and provides joint services such as intermediate care, learning difficulty services and the integrated community equipment store. We also work together on the Local Area Agreement that looks at how South Gloucestershire can improve as a place to live over the next twenty years.
