NHS South Gloucestershire has a huge amount to do but it is nevertheless important that we live within our resources and make good use of the public money at our disposal.
2008/09 was a challenging year for us. Despite this we broke even on our budget of approximately £310 million and continued to invest in areas such as improved access to care that have helped us make progress towards achieving our long term goals.
We invested £4 million in improving access to GP services and primary care and in reducing waiting times for hospital treatment; £4 million on implementing the new national guidelines on continuing healthcare, £1.2 million on providing patients from South Gloucestershire with new treatments and drugs approved by NICE and another £2,5 million in improvements in primary care prescribing.
Moving into 2009/10 we are ensuring that our contracts with our providers include terms that will ensure our patients receive good quality care and we receive value for money. We want to ensure that we spend our money wisely on behalf of patients and that we commission high quality care. Our contracts therefore include targets for exceptional performance and penalties for performance that falls short of our expectations.
