Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 was enacted on the 8th April 2010 bringing together all the separate pieces of anti-discrimination legislation and further strengthens the law. The Act covers the following protected "characteristics": age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage and civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race; religion or belief; sex and sexual orientation. The main provisions of the Act came into effect in October 2010; the new Public Sector Equality Duty came into force on the 5th April 2011 and the ban on age discrimination in the provision of goods, services and public functions is scheduled to come into effect in April 2012.

Single Equality Scheme
NHS South Gloucestershire has produced a Single Equality Scheme and Action Plan which takes into account all the protected characteristics set out in the 2010 Act.   The scheme and action plan were put together by members of the Equalities Action Committee and included feedback from equality groups who were invited to help develop the scheme and action plan.  The scheme runs from April 2011 to March 2012.

Workforce
NHS South Gloucestershire welcomes job applications from all parts of the community and has been awarded the “two ticks” disability symbol showing our commitment to employing disabled people.

As at 13th January 2012 there were 117 [103 full time equivalent] members of staff employed at NHS South Gloucestershire.   All staff currently receive mandatory equality and diversity training which covers the requiremenst of the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act.
